Vigil
“Hate Has No Place in Westport”
Sunday, January 23, 2022, at 4 PM
Westport Friends Meeting
938 Main Road, Westport, MA 02790
(Rain Date: Jan 30 at 4 PM)
Introduction: We have called for this vigil to share with the community our faith journey and to start a dialog with other faith communities and the wider community at large. A few years ago, we began a deep, heartfelt exploration of the roots of racial and institutional injustice in our nation and our own complicity in that. As a faith community we felt called to stand in allyship with Black Lives Matter and placed a Black Lives Matter banner on our Quaker Meeting property located at 938 Main Road, Westport. Our stated testimony may be read HERE.
Almost immediately, banners were stolen, hateful messages left, and personal property was damaged. We reaffirmed our testimony in November of 2021 with additional testimony that may be read HERE.
We have reached out to other community leaders with our struggle, and we have realized that an undercurrent of intolerance exists that is not only directed at us, but also at the LGBTQ community as well as others. We ask you to join us in this vigil on Sunday, Jan 23 at 4 PM in saying clearly that “Hate has no place in Westport.”
Details: Mindful of the need to take precautions with Covid 19, this 30-40 minute vigil will be held out of doors in front of our meetinghouse at 938 Main Road, Westport. Bathrooms, masks, hand sanitizer, and printed resources will be available. As this is an outdoor event, please dress warm. Rain date will be Jan 30 at 4pm.
