Donating Books to our Annual Book Fair

Note of Appreciation:

We are deeply grateful to all who helped make this year’s Book Fair such a success. Thank you to everyone – from all 5 New England states and beyond – who donated fantastic books! Thank you to book lovers near and far who came and bought books during our 9 day sale. And a very special thank you to the adventurous, undaunted people who were at the sale the first day in the torrential rain!

Since 2019, the success of the book fair has helped us to not just meet our budget but to make donations in support of local nonprofits’ efforts to meet the needs of their respective communities. What started out 62 years ago as a “church fundraiser” has become one of the biggest annual homecomings in the area with opportunities for so many connections. We are very grateful to be part of this community.

We will start accepting book donations again on September 7, 2024. Thank you again!

  1. Good day,

I realize that the Book Fair is months away, but can I bring books now? Are you open to receive anytime?

    Thank you!

    • Hello David, Yes, our Book Shed is open 24/7 and many people donate books whenever they want to. The Book Shed sits between the Community House and the meetinghouse, and there’s a sign on the building pointing the way to the unlocked door to drop off books.

Thank you for considering donating books to our annual Book Fair. Next year, our 8-day sale begins on Saturday, July 13. We hope to see you then!

    • Our Book Shed where donations can be dropped off is open every day, 9-5 PM. You’re welcome to drop them off at any time of day during those hours. Thank you!

  2. I am trying to locate a Quaker group in the San Francisco area that might want a collection books that belonged to Mary Hodgkin Barrett. The books are in good condition and fill a banker’s box.

    • Sorry, we don’t know of any Quaker groups in San Fran that are looking for donated books.

  3. Do you have any interest in pre recorded cassette tapes .i have a collection of blues and jazz tapes in like new condition. About 450 tapes.

    • Hello Harry, great to hear from you!! Yes, even though our focus is books, we receive donations of several hundred forms of media every year that get dropped off with donated books. We have a “media section” at our Annual Book Fair that attracts all kinds of collectors, etc. Thanks for thinking of us. Our Book Shed, located between our meetinghouse and Community House, at 930 Main Road, Westport, is open 24/7. You can drop donations off there anytime. Let me know if you have questions. • Hello Joe, If that is the only time that works for you, then sure, we can receive them. Tomorrow, July 13, is the first day of our 8-day Book Fair, and we have 50,000 books going out under the tents, so it’s pretty hectic to say the least. If you can, it’s better to bring them on another day if possible, even during the week ahead and avoid opening day entirely. But it’s your call. Our sale begins tomorrow at 11 AM, but we’ll be on site hauling out books starting at 7 AM. Thank you!

  4. I am wondering if the books donated are tax-deductible?
    Thank you,
    Patricia Gannon

    • Hello Patricia,
Westport Friends Meeting,(Quaker), is a religious body and we are tax exempt. So yes, books donated are tax-deductible. If you need to have document wtih a list of books and their value signed by us for tax purposes, please be in touch and one of our Book Fair Committee members can sign that for you.

  5. We have many boxes of used books, most in very good condition. Are you accepting donations now for next year ? Can they be picked up at our home in South Dartmouth ? Thank you.

    • Hello Bill, Indeed we are accepting donations of books for our Book Fair in July of 2022. (Unfortunately, we are cancelling our Book Fair that was scheduled to begin on July 10, 2021, out of an abundance of caution not to spread Covid 19.

Please be aware that we are unable to accept any text books. To arrange for pickup (I too live in South Dartmouth) please call 508-636-4963. We have members who will contact you and set up a mutual time that works for pickup. Thank you for your consideration!

  6. I was wondering if you took old comic books that are in good condition. Some in their original plastic sleeves. I have many of these that I would like to donate.

    • Hello Diane,
Thanks for asking about this. I have forwarded your question to our Book Fair committee because I don’t ever remember getting a question quite like this. I will get back to you shortly.
And thank you, again, for checking!

      Kevin

    • Hi Diane, The Book Fair Committee folks would be very grateful for your donation of comic books! I didn’t know that we in fact get quite a few of them every year, and somehow I have missed seeing them at our Book Fair myself! So thank you!

Our Book Shed is open two days each week, nine to 5 PM, to receive donations, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, only. Feel free to call me if you have any questions at 508-636-4963.

      Thanks again,
      Kevin

  7. Hello Scott,

We are indeed holding our annual Book Fair from July 9-17, 2022, after a two-year pause due to the pandemic. Unfortunately, though, we are now at capacity for for storage of donated books and other items, so we will not be able to accept any more large donations until the beginning of August. Our sorting crew is out straight and unable to pick up donations at this time as well. We’re very sorry. We hope that you might be able to hold on to your donations until August, and get back in touch with us then for pickup.

  8. I have a variety of books that need a home, Question… what about some art noveau books that are foxed yet have wonderful uncompromised illustrations? They are “the TangleWood Tales” and French Fairy Tales. Someone may take them for their Art Plates. I have other books that are that way and may be treasures. The reality is my children will probably dump them. I just need to them thin out.
Where and when should I bring the books? What about paperback books in good condition?
We’d like to bring our books and attend Meeting.
